Artist Statement | Vikki Wiercinski
This is the ongoing visual arts practice of Canadian artist and designer Vikki Wiercinski, which began in 2016. Partly an investigation into the aesthetics of joy, Vikki also makes a (potentially impossible) attempt at creating exactingly precise forms with her own hands. In her parallel life as a graphic designer, she aims for exact precision with the aid of a computer. Within her artistic practice, which is almost entirely analog, many of the intuitive forms and motifs have a similar sense of the precise but carry with them a balance of craft and the natural effects of making pieces by hand.
Her work speaks to both the impossibility of, and fascination with, precision created by machines and the endurance it takes for a human to repeat variations versus the obvious ease of a machine to do the same process - and challenges us to decide if we like human or machine more.
